We explore the key language and structure features in Alvi’s poem, explaining how she conveys ideas and perspectives about someone wanting to belong in a different place and culture, and wanting to gain a sense of cultural identity, as well as how her use of language and structure impacts on the reader’s thoughts and feelings. Together we make detailed analytical notes on how Alvi creates effects and is able to affect the reader.
Additionally, we explore some of the key context around the poem which is useful for helping a student’s understanding of the poem’s themes, ideas and perspectives.
