Holocaust Memorial Day English Lesson
Holocaust Memorial Day - FREE English lesson on poetry. We explore what the Holocaust was, why it happened and how Jewish people were persecuted in Nazi Germany before and during World War II.
Students gain valuable contextual information on what the concentration camps were and how they operated so that they can analyse and interpret a poem about Frank Foley - known as the British Schindler, who helped tens of thousands of Jewish men, women and children escape the country after Kristallnacht and before the outbreak of war.
Analysing the use of language throughout each stanza, including the use of imagery, metaphor, personification, adverbs, adjectives and motfis, students interpret the poem and how the writer is able to convey their thoughts and feelings about Frank Foley and his actions that saved many lives.
Designed to be used for Holocaust Memorial Day, this lesson is best suited for Year 9 and GCSE (Year 10 and 11) KS4 students given the sensitive nature of the material and context.
It is also useful for unseen poetry lessons and preparation for GCSE English Literature.
