The Ruined Maid by Thomas Hardy - a one hour lesson designed for KS5 students preparing for AQA Love Through The Ages (Paper 1, Spec A 7712) or for unseen poetry exam questions for any of the exam boards like Eduqas, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC.
The lesson explores language and structure, as well as the key themes and messages of the poem around women, society, class, sexuality and religious teachings on the sanctity of marriage.
Additionally, we make comparisons between this poem and others we have explored from the anthology, using structured and targeted questions that allow students to independently draw comparisons between the different poems in the collection, offering ideal preparation for the comparison skills needed for the Paper 1 Section C question.
