Poetry writing lesson for KS3 students that helps students plan an assessment piece for this poetry writing unit.
Students reflect on their learning from the term so far and use their new knowledge, skills and understanding to plan out a poem that is personal and relevant to them.
Students are guided for eight key steps, including planning a message or idea, developing key imagery or images, using language devices for effect, structure and structuring for effect, opening lines, ending lines, and also using meter and form.
Together, step by step we plan out our poems before students are given time to writing out their poetry pieces. Students then peer assess the effectiveness of their creativity based on success criteria.
The resource includes differentiated/adaptive learning strategies to ensure all students are making excellent progress.
Poetry writing is a creative and engaging way to help students understand and analyse poetry, which is so essential for GCSE English Literature study and exams.
This lesson will be part of a full unit on writing poetry that will explore language, structure, form, effects, imagery, messages and more.
